Why we say "fall in love"

English speakers have been saying "fall in love" since 1423, according to an etymology dictionary. There are other uses of "fall" that mean "become," as "fall" does in "fall in love."
"Fall" is something that just happens, is unplanned and most of the time you can't stop it.
